Asbestos Board Removal in Birmingham

Safe & licensed removal of this high risk material

WHY CHOOSE US?

Correct identification before work starts – We confirm whether board on site is AIB, cement-based, or asbestos-free, since the risk level and legal requirements differ significantly between them.

Licensed removal where the law requires it – higher-risk AIB work is notifiable to the HSE, and we handle that process as part of the job, not as an extra you have to arrange.

A building left genuinely clear – full containment, controlled removal, air clearance testing where applicable, and licensed disposal, so nothing is left half-done.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Not all asbestos board is equal. Cement-based sheeting is relatively low-risk because the asbestos fibres are tightly bound in a dense material. Asbestos Insulating Board is a different matter, it’s softer, more friable, and was specifically designed for fire resistance, which means it often contains a much higher proportion of asbestos fibres that can become airborne if it’s cut, drilled, snapped, or damaged. This is why AIB removal is frequently classed as licensed work under UK regulations, requiring specific training, equipment, and notification to the HSE before it starts. Unlike some lower-risk asbestos materials that can be handled as non-licensed work.

If you’re not sure which type of board you’re dealing with, that uncertainty itself is the reason to get it checked by our specialists.

FAQs

What is asbestos board?

“Asbestos board” usually refers to one of two things: cement-based sheeting, used for roofing, cladding, and outdoor structures, or Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB), a lighter, softer board used indoors for fire protection, partition walls, ceiling panels, and boxing around pipes or fuse boards. The two have quite different risk levels, which is why correct identification matters before any removal work is planned.

The risk depends heavily on the type. Cement-based board is dense and low-risk unless it’s cut, drilled, or broken. AIB is more friable, meaning it can release asbestos fibres more readily if damaged, which is why it’s often treated as higher-risk and, in many cases, requires licensed removal. Breathing in released fibres, particularly over repeated exposure, is linked to serious conditions including asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer.

You generally can’t tell reliably by sight, especially once painted or boarded over. AIB tends to be lighter and softer than cement sheet, but the only reliable way to know is testing or a professional survey — which we can arrange quickly.

Not always — it depends on the board type and the condition and extent of the work. Lower-risk, well-bonded materials in good condition can sometimes be handled as non-licensed work. Higher-risk AIB, especially where it’s damaged or the work involves significant disturbance, is usually notifiable and must be carried out by a licensed contractor. We’ll tell you which category your job falls into once we’ve assessed it.

It depends heavily on the quantity and location — a single fuse box panel is a very different job to stripping out partition walls across an office floor. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe as part of the quote.

It’s safely bagged or wrapped depending on its condition, transported by licensed carrier, and disposed of at an authorised facility, with a Waste Transfer Note provided as proof.
